It all started because I was running late to morning court hearings. I often would need to call the Court clerk to let them know I was running a few minutes behind. Weaving through Los Angeles traffic while digging through my client file, it was a miracle that I not only did not drive of the road, but that I made it to court at all.
I wondered if there was an app out there for lawyers so they could call the court department they were headed to easily. I searched – and I didn’t find anything. I talked to my friends Faisal Kadri and Zohaib Qazi, both IT geniuses and we sat down to figure out building an app for lawyers searching for their departments. But we decided to take it one step further – we wanted attorneys to be able to rate the judge and department they were headed to. Does the judge sanction no-shows? Does the judge allow for informal meet-and-confers for discovery disputes? What about the ex partes – in chambers or on the bench? Is the judge’s clerk going to snap at you for not handing over the correct number of business cards?
We believe that easy access to information about our court system is crucial for a vibrant, fair and more efficient judiciary. We also believe it allows for judicial officers to be held to a more transparent standard. With Judge Judger, every judge will have the opportunity to be judged by the public and members of the Bar about their professionalism, efficiency, competency and fairness. Everyone will be allowed to leave their comments and constructive criticism as well as pointers for what to be prepared for when they enter that courtroom.
